Lawn maintenance can either be done by a professional landscaper, or by the homeowner or renter. Lawn maintenance can be easy when it is done on a regular basis, giving attention to seasonal care such as fertilizer and weed removal. The simplest form of lawn maintenance is mowing, which keeps the lawn looking healthy and well maintained. If mowed at least once a week between the spring and fall seasons, a lawn will require less maintenance than if it is allowed to grow and develop the grains, weeds, and attract pests that can harm a lawn.

In addition to mowing, lawn maintenance also requires watering a lawn to help keep the roots moist so the grass grows lush and green. Most lawns require at least 1” of water a week during non-rainy seasons. As with plants, the best time to water a lawn is either early in the morning, or late in the afternoon when the lawn does not have direct exposure to the sun. The lawn should be watered evenly using a sprinkler system that is either portable or permanent.

Regular seasonal lawn maintenance includes fertilizing, which promotes the healthy growth of grass. Fertilizer should always be applied using a spreader, which controls the amount of fertilizer spread onto the lawn. Fertilizing a lawn is best done during the spring and fall seasons.

Other forms of lawn maintenance also include aerating and dethatching, both which promotes the healthy growth of grass. Aerating allows the oxygen to flow better through the soil, while dethatching removes dead grass that entwines itself around the base of the healthy grass in a lawn. Aerating and dethatching are best done by a landscaper or lawn care professional who can perform the procedure without damaging the lawn.

Lawn maintenance can also involve the repair of a lawn which has extensive grass troubles, or the replacement of a dead lawn with a new one.
